QUAKE & VOLCANO WORLD NEWS Published 11/18/15
SCENARIO
You and your classmates work at a Global News Center. Your job is to educate the public about a natural disaster. To help deepen your understanding of this unit, you will research an assigned seismic belt or volcano location. You will deliver the news to your classmates - either by a written news article (with pictures and color!) or as a TV news broadcast.
This assignment encompasses the following earth/environmental science essential standards:
I can explain how earthquakes and volcanoes impact the lithosphere.
I can demonstrate the location of earthquakes and volcanoes based on information contained in a variety of maps.
I can explain the probability of and preparation for geohazards like earthquakes and volcanoes based on available data.
Here are the topics!
Quakes: Haiti, Afghanistan, San Francisco, Napa, Chile
Volcanoes: Pinatubo, Vesuvius, Hawaii, St. Helens, Iceland
PLAN
In class you will be assigned a place in the world that experiences earthquakes or has active volcanoes . You will decide which project -written or presented- you want to complete. If you want to give the news presentation by working with a partner, great! Let Ms. W know right away what you pick and then get right to work.
You will receive a grading rubric for the project you choose (click HERE to view an electronic version of the grading criteria). IF you choose to present to the class with a partner, you & your partner will divide the research topics and other work equally on the rubric sheet.
TASK ONE
Now you are ready to begin researching your news event. You will take research notes, based upon the grading rubric, in class and beyond. Developing good research skills is essential for your success in school, so let's get to work! You will receive a separate Practice grade for your research. Make sure your research notes are complete and orderly. Research notes will be due at the conclusion of the project in class.
You are allowed to use the following types of websites for your research:

You may need to spend time on the computer, printing, writing, and so on. You may need to learn how to use a new computer program. You may need to search the internet for pictures or videos. You may need to go to the media center or the public library after school. You may need to email Ms. W for extra help. You may need to print things, draw, or create a digital presentation.

Turn in your research notes, worth 10 points. Turn in your project grading rubric with your news report OR give your TV news to the class, worth 40 points. Put your name on all of these things.
